F1 in Schools is an international STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) competition for school children aged 11–18. Students are challenged to work in teams to design, construct and race the fastest Formula One Car of the Future powered by compressed air cylinders using the official F1 Model Block and utilising CAD/CAM design tools.
The competition currently operates in over 40 different countries, starting with Regional Finals, then Nationals, and World Finals in Singapore in September. Team members also have the opportunity to win scholarships with Ranstadt-Williams, and various other automotive and engineering companies who sponsor the competition.
Monifieth High entered teams in two categories: Development Class and Professional Class.
Blue Lightning is a unique team of six Monifieth High pupils competing in F1 in schools. Each team member has a specific skill set and qualities that makes the team successful. The team works together to solve problems and meet deadlines in a creative way. We support each other emotionally throughout the competition. We won our class to represent Scotland in the National Finals at Silverstone Racing Circuit on March 19th.
We would like to thank all of our supporters, especially our top sponsors Honda, McGills, and Red Bull Racing. F1 in schools allows us to sculpt our future with the skill set we continue develop. Please follow us on Twitter @2018BLightning
At the Regional Finals we recently won Fastest Car award, and first place overall in Scotland. We will now carry this success through to the National Final in Silverstone on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th March 2018. In this part of the competition we will be competing to be the best in the UK hoping to secure a place in the international world final against teams from across the globe for the Bernie Ecclestone World Champions Trophy.
We are very grateful to everyone who helped us get this far, especially our main sponsors Angus 3D Solutions, CSC Interiors and Dundee University. You can find out more about our team on our Twitter page @monifieth_nova
Both teams have already raised hundreds of pounds through sponsorship and fundraising events such as bag packing and raffles, but the travel costs to get two teams and their display stands to Silverstone to take part in a two day event are huge.
