- SUPPPORTING FAMILIES | MonifiethHighSchool
SUPPORTING PUPILS AND FAMILIES Monifieth High School is committed to supporting its young people and their families in a variety of ways. We have several staff members who work together to achieve this including Olive Wainwright PT ASN, Laura Anderson PT Heart, our Family Learning Champion Gemma Chapman, Resource Worker Claire Morrison and Lisa Herbert, PT Pupil Care and Support. Please see the link below to Connecting Parents Angus which includes a wide array of links to websites and information on how to refer into services which support wellbeing and offer financial information and advice. This includes partners we work with in the school such as Penumbra, Hillcrest Futures, Place2be, Young Carers, Maximise Angus and Social Security Scotland. These partners attend many of our school events and can provide free, confidential and impartial advice. We will advise of their attendance prior to any event and offer an opportunity to secure an appointment if required. This site also contains information on how to apply for Free School Meals, Clothing Grants and Educational Maintenance Allowance. Connecting Parents Angus Parent Zone Scotland School Resources Every pupil who accesses free school meals can request a free school hoody at the start of the school year. For all pupils there is also the option of accessing further school resources such as PE kits, scientific calculators, stationery, revision guides and chrome-books. We also have a stock of pre-loved hoodies and revision guides available for collection from our reception. These hoodies can provide families with a valuable ‘spare’ and means less of our uniforms end up in landfill so please help yourself if you are passing. There will also be a stall at every school event so please help yourselves to anything we have. If you would like to request any materials from our School Resource Bank, please fill in the form below: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=oyzTzM4Wj0KVQTctawUZKVhxB0nVKxpOkREhKX47UE1UQVRZSFYxTkdNU09JRTNJNks0NExNQllDNy4u Opportunity Fund As part of our Pupil Equity Funding, it is our goal to ensure that no pupil misses out on valuable extra-curricular opportunities as a result of financial pressures. These experiences are so important to a young person’s development and are central to their sense of belonging in the school community. Our Opportunity Fund is funding that can be accessed on request. Each extra-curricular activity or event will be advertised through the usual channels but will have a Glow form attached via a link or QR code which will allow a parent/carer to request financial support for their young person to attend. If you would like your young person to attend an activity or event but have been unable to request funding, please contact Lisa Herbert on l.herbert@angusschools.org.uk . If you would like to apply for support for your a pupil to attend school trips or events please use the following link; Opportunity Fund - application form Breakfast Club We currently have a Breakfast Club serving free drinks and an array of breakfast items including cereal, toast, cereal bars and fruit which is available from 8.30am in C51 (Home Economics). Breakfast Bars are also available in the Library, Learning Zone, Guidance Base and in Claire Morrison’s office. These provisions are OPEN TO ALL and pupils can either ‘grab and go’ or ‘stay and socialise’. Targeted Support Group At Monifieth High our goal is to ensure equity and inclusion is at the core of everything we do, and we are committed to working with parents and carers to ensure all our young people thrive. As such, we monitor and track all pupils, offering more targeted support to young people who may require this. We offer targeted support to pupils who are care-experienced, young carers, in receipt of free school meals, live in SIMD 1 or 2, are supported by social work or have experienced a traumatic event such as bereavement. This ensures that these young people's progress is monitored closely in each of their subject areas and - if support is required - it is made available to them as a priority to ensure they meet their potential academically and their health and wellbeing is supported. This is coordinated by Nichola Randles (English Teacher) who works alongside the guidance team. If you feel your child meets the criteria to be included in this group and you have not yet been contacted, please contact their Pupil Care and Support Teacher. Supporting Attendance We are aware that many of our young people are coping with a range of challenges in their lives - as are families - which are impacting upon a young person's ability to attend school. As such we are working with a variety of partners, including Educational Psychology, to ensure our pupils are supported to achieve their best. Attendance is monitored throughout each academic session and contact will be made with home at key points in the year to highlight any concerns. Our Pupil Care and Support team and Additional Support Needs team work closely with families and young people who may be experiencing barriers to attendance to provide, or signpost to, the appropriate support. If you would like any further information about the support available, please contact your young person's Pupil Care and Support teacher in the first instance. In the event of absence please ensure the office is contacted on 01382 768100. Don’t miss out on Child Benefit Resource Pack
- WIDER ACHIEVEMENT | MonifiethHighSchool
Wider Achievement As our young people progress through Monifieth High School we aim to equip them with skills and experiences that will allow them to succeed in their post-school life, whatever career they choose to enter. This requires the development of skills such as creativity, innovation, collaboration, adaptability, leadership, persuasion and emotional intelligence. From S1 to S6, we offer a range of wider achievement opportunities which help pupils to build these skills and demonstrate to employers, further and higher education establishments that they are ready to take on the challenges that are ahead of them. Collectively our wider achievement opportunities form the Monifieth High School Leadership Academy. We encourage our young people to take every opportunity that our Leadership Academy offers and we look forward to watching them grow as individuals along the way. The MHS Leadership Academy provides pupils with the opportunity to be involved in the life of the school and develop their leadership skills as they journey through the school from S1 - S6. The purpose of the Leadership Academy is: to develop formal leadership opportunities for S1 - S6 pupils. to develop leadership skills essential for life in work, training or further education. to ensure our young peoples' skills are recognised and their qualification portfolio is developed. Monifieth High School Leadership Academy We know how to get qualifications but how do we get employability skills? How do we build on the leadership skills we developed in primary school?

CURRICULUM FOR EXCELLENCE MATHS Instruction in Mathematics at Monifieth High School is characterised by the department's enthusiasm, and the depth of its scope. Pupils learn that exam success exists alongside enthusiasm for the subject. View More S1 S2 N3/N4 Apps Pupil Downloads N5 Apps N5 Higher ENGLISH Our English department strives to instil both knowledge and enthusiasm for words in our pupils. Through a range of texts, topics and tasks, pupils are given the very best guidance through this rewarding course of study. While English is fundamental to effective communication, it is also a field of study which enriches the lives of those who embrace it. Our English department has a record of delivering excellent results but, more than this, it instils an enthusiasm for novels, poetry, drama and non-fiction. All of our English staff use the subject to help pupils develop empathy and understanding of the world in which they live, giving them the confidence and knowledge to express their feelings and ideas. View More Pupil Downloads HEALTH IMROVEMENT FACULTY Our Physical Education and Home Economics departments provide both a solid grounding for pupils, as well a platform for those to specialise in these areas of study. Our school believes firmly in mens sana in corpore sano and our Health Improvement faculty ensures that all pupils understand the importance of taking health matters seriously, in school and out. Our football, netball, hockey and other teams compete with other schools, locally, regionally and nationally, giving Monifieth High pupils the competitive experiences which enrich their learning. An understanding of the world in which we live is the cornerstone of a well-rounded education. This is fostered in History, Geography, Modern Studies and R.M.P.S. more than anywhere else in the school. Monifieth High's Social Subjects faculty has a proven track-record of academic achievement, whilst always giving pupils the experiences that allow them to see fully why the world is as it is. Our M.F.L. department gives pupils the tools they need to understand, apply and love non-English languages. Never before have foreign languages been so important; in the last twenty years the internet has shrunk our world, bringing countless new opportunities and applications for non-English language. Our pupils receive experienced instruction and guidance in French and Spanish, arming pupils with the confidence to express themselves in another language, whether in examination, or when on holiday. These difficulties may be long or short term and the ASN department work closely with subject departments to ensure that learners are supported appropriately. Our aim is to go beyond simply providing a safety net; we enable learners to develop an awareness of themselves, and develop coping strategies for life after school, while fostering a balance between academic achievement and personal/social achievement. - REPORTING | MonifiethHighSchool
REPORTING By the end of P7 most pupils will have completed the Curriculum for Excellence Level 2 Experiences and Outcomes. During S1-S3 most will be working on the Level 3 Experiences and Outcomes with many moving on to Level 4 in S2-S3. Pupil’s will move through the Experiences and Outcomes at their own pace. From 25/26 session, all Angus schools are now using the BGE achievement within a level codes and descriptors as shown in the table above. More information on the levels and descriptors can be found in the document below. ASSESSMENT There are four main ways in which pupils will be assessed during the Junior Phase: ➢ WRITE – where a pupil may have some written evidence e.g. end of unit assessment ➢ MAKE – where a pupil may have created a model or a poster ➢ SAY – where a pupil may have presented to the class or classmates ➢ DO – where pupils may act out a scenario or conduct a class vote Assessment is crucial to our tracking progress, planning next steps in learning, reporting and involving parents and learners in learning. Evidence of progress can be gathered by learners themselves, and by fellow pupils, parents, teachers and other professionals. A number of approaches are employed including (but not limited to) the following Self-assessment – learners are encouraged and supported to look at and revisit their own work, to develop a better understanding of what they have learned, and what they need to work on Peer assessment – learners are encouraged and supported to work together to help others assess what is good about their work and what needs to be worked on Personal learning planning – children, teachers and parents work together to develop planning for next steps in learning. Your child’s progress is not only based on ‘tests’ but on the learning that takes place within the classroom and in different settings both within and out with the classroom. Evidence of children and young people’s progress and achievements will come from day-to-day learning and through the things they may write, say, make or do. For example, evidence may emerge as a result of children and young people taking part in a presentation, discussion, performance, or practical investigation. From 25/26 session, all Angus schools are now using the BGE achievement within a level codes and descriptors as shown in the table above. More information on the levels and descriptors can be found in the document below.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR LEARNING All children and young people have the right to get the support they need to reach their full learning potential. In Scotland, we have an inclusive educational system which focuses on overcoming barriers to learning and Getting it right for every child (GIRFEC). Some children and young people need additional support to benefit fully from their education. Additional support needs can arise, in the short or long term, from a variety of circumstances including: the learning environment family circumstances health or disability needs social and emotional factors Mainstream education - Scotland’s inclusive approach to education enables all children and young people to be part of a community, boosting their emotional wellbeing and aiding the development of social skills. Children and young people should learn in the environment which best suits their needs and inclusive practice is important whatever the setting, whether it be within a mainstream or special school. The presumption of mainstreaming enshrines the right of all children and young people with additional support needs to learn in mainstream schools and early learning and childcare settings. - LEARNING FOR SUSTAINABILITY & UNCRC | MonifiethHighSchool
Welcome to our Rights Respecting School This year Monifieth High School has been working towards recognition as a Rights Respecting School, working with UNICEF to educate pupils and staff on children's rights and how to put them into practice every day. The Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) recognises achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of a school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos. A rights-respecting school not only teaches about children’s rights but also models right and respect in all its relationships . This means that the whole school community will learn about rights, pupils will be involved in decisions about their school and the school community will have the knowledge to take action on standing up for rights of children across the world. We are very happy to announce we have been awarded our Bronze Badge, and are currently working towards our silver. A Right's Respecting School doesn't just benefit the school, it makes a positive impact on the whole community. Children are healthier and happier Children feel safe Children have better relationships Children become active and involved in school life and the wider world.
